Why I Wrote the Piano Owner’s Mini Handbook

Confessions of a Piano Technician Who's Seen Too Much

Hey there.

If you’ve ever owned a piano—or are thinking of getting one—you probably already know this: pianos are beautiful, emotional, living instruments.

But what most people don’t know… is how easily they can go downhill without the right care.

I’m not here to guilt-trip anyone. I’ve just been a piano technician long enough to see how a little neglect over time leads to big (and expensive) problems.

And that’s exactly why I wrote the Piano Owner’s Mini Handbook.

---

“We Haven’t Tuned It in Years… But It Still Sounds Okay!”

I hear that line a lot.

People call me in to tune their piano after 3, 5—even 10 years. When I open the lid, I usually find:

  • Rusty strings

  • Wobbly hammers

  • Sticky keys

  • And pitch so far off that tuning it risks snapping wires.

I’ve even seen mold growing inside because the piano was placed near a humid window. Or worse—pianos that were moved by hand across the floor (don’t do this!) and cracked the legs or pedals.

“It may look okay from the outside, but the inside tells a different story.”

Most Piano Owners Just Don’t Know What They Don’t Know

And I get it.

Nobody hands you a piano care manual when you buy one. Salespeople rarely explain proper placement, humidity, or servicing. Many owners think tuning once every few years is “good enough.”

But here’s the truth:

If you want your piano to sound good, feel responsive, and last 30–50 years (or more), it needs regular TLC.

That’s where the idea for this handbook came from.

Why I Wrote It

I wrote this book because I care about the music in your home.

I’ve seen too many great pianos go out of tune, out of action, or even end up in the landfill—all because no one told the owner what to do.

This is my way of changing that.
